ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

I have made it to week 3 of the One Room Challenge.  Sticking to a schedule is not one of my strengths.

Oh how I wish it was.

But here we are....and I am still in the game.

Last week I left you with the fabrics that are already in the room.
A quick review.  The existing sofa is the brown, 4 chairs in the off white.  Panels are done in the toile, along with 2 pillows in the blue fabric on the left.  The small check was used in the kitchen [open floor plan] on the bar stools, so it is not really in the room.

The other day I started adding fabrics to see how they can change this room......although keep in mind our appointment is not until next Monday so nothing is set in stone!!!

In this one I added a geometric, a smaller fabric similar to the existing pillows and a brown.

Then I exchanged the geometric for an animal......I also added a darker velvet.
Then I took out the brown.....threw in a stripe to compliment the dark velvet.  We have 4 chairs and a sofa to "pillow up".....

Here are the chairs.  As I spoke about at Haven....this is the Charles of London arm that I believe to be a classic.  You can see that the rug is a nice neutral.
There is a nice little seating alcove, where 2 of the pillows are.

OK...a few more changes in the fabrics....
Took out the animal...added back in the geometric and another pretty diamond linen fabric.

More....OK.
Let's get crazy now...Ralph Lauren animal....a dark linen and small tan linen next to it.

One more tweak....
I threw in the Ikat....just for grins.

You have a favorite?
6 different ways to go.....I will sit down and "drill hard"...before Monday to narrow it down to 3.  Then throw in some art and accessories to help pull the plan together.

Take a look at the progress everyone else has made.  Some people are using power tools....makes me feel kind of lame.

Lauren - The Cottage Mix
Lindsay - Everything LEB
Barbara - Hodge:Podge
Tiffany - Living Savvy
Jessie - Mix & Chic
Danylle - Nana Moon
Jennifer - The Pink Pagoda
Emily - Rue de Emily
Lindsay - Sadie + Stella

Does anyone out there color their hair......?
I do.  My Dad was gray by the time he was 40...so it runs in my family.  Every now and then I will do a "root touch up" in between appointments to save some moola.

The other day I decided to throw a little on my eyebrows....I have seen them do that at salons before.  I know what you are thinking...are you crazy?  Why yes...yes I am.

You would think I have enough to worry about on my face other than a few gray hairs peaking out of the brows.

I mean those suckers are on your face....everyday where they are seen by everyone.  Oh please.....how bad can it be?

Go into the computer room...wait the 10 minutes and then back to the bathroom to rinse out.....

WHOA MF......

One look in the mirror and I saw Groucho Marx looking back at me.  What the ......

I could not get in the shower fast enough scrubbing my face  and praying to Jesus......"please...I will never play with dye around my face again....swear".

I couldn't even wait until I finished washing my hair...jumped out of the shower dripping wet to see the damage.

I am happy to report that even though that little episode of reckless abandon scared the living shit out of me.....they did not look any different.

Oh but I learned a lesson.  HAIR dye belongs on the head...not the face.  I got it.  Now my hair is even grayer because of the scare :)

Don't forget to come by the North building at Scott's in the back RH corner...near the food  [I can't remember the booth number].  I will be there Friday hanging out with all of the beautiful pillows.  I will tweet the booth number when I get there.

LOL! Mom and I always used to color our own hair, but the end result *for me, not her* was always running straight to the salon to fix whatever leopard striped i put in my hair on accident. i love that story and laughed at the Marxist look. Hope they are fading out soon.

oh, and love the fabrics too :)

Love the first and second pics of the fabrics. I really like that dark brown print thrown into the mix. As for the eyebrows, I dye mine all the time. Just a little will do. Got a good chuckle at you. Hugs, Marty

I wish I could help you with the fabric choices, but I'm lost. They all look great to me. Once in a while I will touch up my roots, but have never tried the eyebrows. Tomorrow is hair day for me. I can't wait to get my natural color put back on my head. I'm so proud of you for hanging in, by the way.

Sherry, being an older gray haired lady who colours her hair, I have an eyebrow issue as well. Occasionally I get them done at the hair salon but I have found an excellent product that you may want to check out. Lancome sells an eyebrow "mascara" meant to cover those gray hairs. It is sold in three colours - for blondes, brunettes and darker. Check it out. It's a lot better than pulling them out or worrying about them which probably only serves to help them grow grayer.

P.S. Chuckle from you , not at you. Sorry. Hugs, Marty

I have been "playing" with my hair for almost 50 years! Done it all. After deciding that the price of touch ups was not in our old age retirement budge, I had my husband color my hair...that lasted 8 months. Don't go there! My last and present plan.. leaving it natural with "highlights" every 5 months. As far as eye brows, remember the old eye brow pencils...I will look for the Lancome mascara. That sounds interesting.
I like all the fabric combinations, can't wait to see which is the winner. Patty

I love that last pic! I used that ikat in our family room. Good ideas for what to mix in!! And I've had to color my hair since 18. Early grey runs in my family too. Have to leave it to the pros though. My hair is brown but at home coloring tends to turn it reddish. Or purple. Amber B.

I have discovered the perfect product for coloring the eyebrows. It works so well that I don't bother having them done at the salon anymore, because this actually works better. It is called Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel. I apply it every morning before adding my regular brow shadow. It colors each hair individually, with no mess, and takes only a few seconds.

OH MY GOSH! You have me hysterically laughing at your eyebrow story! I have wondered myself about using hair color there myself. I don't need to yet, but thought about down the road that might be an option. Guess not!

Not an interior designor, so don't know if my likes and dislikes mean much...don't like the striped fabric - maybe if I saw it in the final product I would feel differently. Love the dark brown with floral, the dark velvet and animal print collection of fabrics.

Love all the fabric options! You have an eye for sure! I need color on my hair now, do I dare do it myself?

The fabrics are great, but the eyebrow info is invaluable :)

I am loving the ikat and the peacock blue, can't wait to see what you decide !

Katherine said...

I like the fourth option, but that means now you have to provide the sources - especially the diamond and striped.

Loving all the fabrics! Ha, my mom died her hair green once, and then orange!! I used to do mine, but hated the one color look...too dull. And, I am not about to attempt highlighting my own hair!

You are hilarious!! I about wet my pants reading about you dying your eyebrows!!

Love all the fabrics you have chosen!!

Oh, Sherry. That is hilarious! I can only imagine the panic. Your client is going to have a hard time deciding between the fabrics. They all look great. What a gorgeous room, too!

You are hilarious! Groucho Marx?! Ha! Sherry, the last fabric combo is perfect - well I like them all, but like that on the most.

I love all your fabric choices, its hard to narrow them down to just a few. I am actually really liking the dark brown in the mix- I think it adds some depth to all the light colors. But thats just me :) If you arent a big fan of it in the end, maybe using it for piping for one of the pillows could be cool. Cant wait to see what you end up with!

I got tired of paying $30+ for having my brows done so I started doing them myself. I use a Just For Men facial hair coloring kit. One kit lasts a looooong time and the color develops in five minutes (don't wait too long!). I always dip a Q-tip in olive oil and run it under and around my eyebrows so I don't stain my skin or color any fine little hairs then apply the color gently. I can color my brows from start to finish faster than it used to take me to drive to the salon! Good luck. :)

LOVE all the fabric choices. Can;t wait to see the complete look! Keep us posted :)

Love the RL Animal print ... striking!! And I am certain your groucho eyebrows could curve up and convince your client it IS the right way to go!! Glad you didn't have to use them to your advantage!! Have fun at Scott's this weekend ... i am headed to Brimfield and hoping for some fantastic finds!!

Love the last 3 options the best - although who I'm I kidding they are all fab. As for the eyebrow info, VERY good timing as I'm looking to do some in-home spa work this weekend. I'll remember this!

The mixing and matching of patterns here is to die. To die!

Oh, sister, I've been coloring these roots since I was 26! An old hairdresser talked me into coloring my brows once, and I hated it.

FYI.. if you're in a pinch and need to cover some grays for the day, eye shadow does the trick.

Love all your fabric selections! You're the queen... you don't need my input :)

I like the last set best - that RL animal is to die for! And I knew a girl in high school that tried to dye her brows and they fell out! You said it - no dyes on the face. Glad it turned out okay for ya. ;)

Sherry the lost Marx sister! :-)
Proud of your gumption to give dye at home a try. Your results are why I have always stopped at just reading the boxes in the drugstore.

I stopped coloring (except for one last try at year 3) about 6 years ago. Since we moved to sunny Cal from Western WA it kept fading out to a mahogany reddish instead of the black I wanted.

Since all of my ancestors have always had gray hair (that great salt n'pepper/pewter) it looks familiar when I look in the mirror. Though it causes some of these 50ish SoCal ladies distress when they see I am outing their "secrets"!

Love your fabric choices - I agree that you need to balance the sofa with another saturated color. So either the 1st brown or the velvet.

Cheers!

Hilarious, the brows not the fabrics. I for one do not look in the mirror in the bath coz they are just to harsh even when I let it get down to one bulb in the light fixture.
I am sure you will nail the fabs. Looking good.

You are hilarious! Your fabric selections are awesome too; I'm always a fan of a little animal print :)

divine fabrics, insane antics, keep layin em on us.

have not tinted the eyebrows but have tried at-home root touch up...NIGHTMARISH FAIL. somehow we delude ourselves into thinking nothing could be worse than dark roots, and we are SO wrong. i'm a natural blonde w/grey so i do the highlight thing which is a painful investment but beats hair humiliation.

laughing with you.

I was so sad not to get around to everyone's post yesterday. It's crazy at my house right now. I needed the huge belly laugh from reading your eyebrow story. The fabrics are all beautiful. I don't know how in the world you'll narrow it to three!!

Lindsay said...

The Ralph Lauren animal print is definitely one of my favorites, but you really can't go wrong with all the selections you have!

Barbara Matson said...

OMG! That eyebrow story is hilarious! It is something I would SO do!

The fabrics are amazing, ALL of the them. Oh to have gads of memos kicking around, I would just be beside myself to be surrounded by fabric. And yes, sticking to a schedule is NOT my forte.

You crack me up!! I seem to have some gray strays in my right eyebrow only? So, I keep the little kit from Clariol of Touch Up. Then I use a teenie tiny squirt of each of them and apply it to those nasty gray strays using a q tip. I try my darnest to keep it off my skin put it kinda foams - I remove with some of my shampoo. Personally I do not like gray eyebrows especially when they have the coarseness of nail. That is so not fair!!! But, I am very vain so I gotta do what I gotta do!!

I love all the fabric choices...they are all right in my wheelhouse! The eyebrow experiment made me laugh out loud!! Glad you saved the day..and your face!

Laughing so hard!!! you don't know it yet....but you're going to be my friend!! I died my brows once or twice...didn't change much..if at all. Asked my husband if he could tell and he said no and gave me a weird look, then said "what other areas are you going to start dying?" really hubby?? I cook your meals most of the time and do other stuff I hate ...just for you. Light red hair and brows do not color well...I'm doomed. Love the trellis, velvet and stripe! can' t wait for the reveal!

An eyebrow comment - I am a fair skinned red head with blonde eyebrows - I have had the groucho marx situation (when I picked up carpool, my then 5 year old daughter started crying when she saw me).

But - I have also had very successful eyebrown tinting - the key word is tinting - it has to be subtle! But, it only lasts 2-3 weeks. So I tend to do the eyebrow pencils that are designed for this kind of thing!

New here, but had to comment on the eyebrow dye. I have actually used men's beard and mustache dye kit on my eyebrows. It did cover the white hairs. I also brushed a little vaseline on the area around the eyebrow so any misplaced dye would not stain my skin.
